St Mirren  1  Dundee United  1

Danny Lennon’s new look St Mirren were one agonising minute away from pulling off a surprise opening day victory against last season’s Scottish Cup winners Dundee United at Greenhill Road.

It took a last gasp Jon Daly goal to deny The Buddies, but in all honesty it was the least United deserved for their efforts, with Paul Gallacher easily the busier of the two keepers.

Saints had earlier taken the lead in spectacular fashion on 73 minutes when new signing Sean Lynch sent a right-foot volley into the top corner from the edge of the box.

But United’s pressure eventually told when Daly side-footed home a Morgaro Gomis cross.

St Mirren: Gallacher, Van Zanten, Potter, McGregor, Travner, Murray, Thomson, Robb (Love 80), Lynch, Wardlaw (Mair 61), McGowan

Dundee Utd: Pernis, Dillon, Dixon, Dods, Kenneth, Conway (Cadamarteri 81), Robertson (Myrie-Williams 74), Buaben, Gomis, Daly, Goodwillie

Goals:
St Mirren: Lynch [73]; Dundee United: Daly [89]

St Mirren 1  Kilmarnock 0

Andy Dorman grabbed the winner as St Mirren took a massive step towards Scottish Premier League survival with what could be a crucial victory over relegation rivals Kilmarnock.

Dorman struck late on with the only goal of the game in what was a scrappy clash at new St Mirren Park as both sides desperately tried to haul themselves away from the danger zone.

In a further boost for the Paisley club, bottom side Falkirk also suffered defeat against Hamilton, meaning Saints are now four points clear of the drop zone, while Killie remain a single point ahead of rock-bottom Bairns.

St Mirren: Gallacher, Mair, Potter, Barron, Carey (Johnston 80), Murray (Brady 21), Dorman, Thomson, O'Donnell (Dargo 57), Robb, Higdon

Kilmarnoack: Bell, Clancy, Wright, Ford, Bryson (Skelton 66), Pascali, Kelly, Hamill, Severin (Maguire 46), Kyle, Burchill (Fowler 45)

Goals: St Mirren: Dorman (74)

No new injury worries for Gus

23/04/2010 15:49:58 by SPLBanter filed in News.

Buddies defender Steven Robb realises the importance of three points this weekend as they prepare to host Kilmarnock at Greenhill Road.

Only goal difference separates the two teams and the pair are only a point better off than Falkirk at the foot of the table.

St Mirren effectively dropped two points last weekend when they conceded that controversial injury-time penalty at McDiarmid Park, which Paul Sheerin subsequently dispatched.

However, Robb believes that they can use the disappointment of that incident in a game they dominated to bringing them together.

He said: "When you experience something like that, there is a good chance it can galvanise you.

"We were gutted not to take all three points from the St Johnstone match after playing so well.

"But we’ve got the bit between our teeth and we’re sticking together.

"We are entering a difficult stage in the season and must take every point available if we are going to stay up."

Robb speaking in the Glasgow Evening Times admitted has been surprised that Kilmarnock under Jimmy Calderwood are in the predicament they are, and expects a tough game.

He continued: "It’s going to be a closely-fought game. I know Kilmarnock lost 3-0 to Hamilton last week, but there wasn’t much in that game, according to the reports, so we know we’ll be in for a right tough 90 minutes.

"This game is all about taking chances. Whoever puts the ball in the back of the net will come out on top in this one. We must work hard."

The Buddies have no fresh injury worries for the visit of Killie and Gus MacPherson is likely to name an unchanged side from the draw at McDiarmid.

St Johnstone 2 St Mirren 2

St Johnstone 2  St Mirren 2

A late Paul Sheerin penalty controversially contested by The Buddies but correctly awarded for a handball on the line by Stephen O’Donnell, robbed St Mirren of a crucial three points at McDiarmid Park and left them just one point ahead of Falkirk at the foot with four games remaining.

St Johnstone began the brighter with Grainger and Filipe Morais both firing long-range efforts over, the former coming closest from a free-kick.

But St Mirren, whose cause was far greater, quickly responded when O'Donnell neatly turned Grainger in the penalty area before skewing wide.

A scrappy, tense affair soon developed, before Saints passed up a glorious opening on 22 minutes.

Kenny Deuchar won a header at the edge of the area and Duberry cushioned the ball into on-loan Celtic forward Cillian Sheridan's path, who could only shoot over from 12 yards.

St Mirren hit back with their best chance of the half four minutes later.

David Barron fed O'Donnell from the right, whose hooked ball saw Dorman strike first time from the penalty spot.

His effort looked net-bound but clipped the top of Graeme Smith's bar.

The Paisley side were to have better luck on 33 minutes when they broke the deadlock.

O'Donnell did well to dig out a cross from the right by-line and his centre across goal saw Carey beat Duberry to force home from close range.

McInnes was forced into a first change on 36 minutes as Liam Craig trooped off to be replaced by Davidson.

Four minutes from the interval only the heroics of Smith denied the visitors a second.

Robb's cross from the left was perfect for Dorman whose close-range downward header was stopped by the legs of Smith.

With their tails up, St Mirren claimed a delightful second goal only five minutes after the break.

The impressive Mehmet controlled a long ball upfield, turning brilliantly to play a sweeping ball into the path of the onrushing Dorman.

Smith raced from his goal to narrow the angle, but the Welshman calmly lifted the ball over him and into the empty net from 25 yards.

The hosts were struggling to get any foothold in the game as St Mirren - who soon saw Mehmet's penalty claim turned down by Richmond for a perceived foul by Smith - held the ascendancy.

St Mirren goalkeeper Paul Gallacher was finally brought into action on 75 minutes as he held Morais' angled drive at his near post. But, out of the blue, a grandstand finish was set up when Duberry scrambled home his first goal for McInnes' men.

In a penalty box melee, Samuel nodded against the post before Davidson hooked back across goal for Duberry to rise highest to nod in.

O'Donnell headed a yard over at the other end before Samuel pulled just wide as an otherwise tame contest sprang to life.

The visitors looked set to hold on, but an incredible finish saw St Johnstone claim a point.

After a Morais free-kick was not cleared, Davidson's shot was blocked on the line by O'Donnell's arm.

Richmond awarded a penalty but appeared unsure who was the offender and spent fully three minutes discussing with assistant James Bee who was set to be handed a red card.

But, bizarrely, amid furious protests from the visitors, Richmond only booked O'Donnell.

Fully four minutes into stoppage time, substitute Sheerin stepped up to net the spot-kick.

St Mirren protests continued after the final whistle as they vented their fury at Richmond.

St Johnstone: Smith, Irvine, Grainger (Sheerin 81), Anderson, Duberry, Morris, Millar, Craig (Davidson 36), Morais, Deuchar, Sheridan (Samuel 60)

St Mirren: Gallacher, Mair, Potter, Barron, Carey, Murray, Dorman, Thomson, O'Donnell, Robb, Mehmet

Goals: St Mirren: Carey (33), Dorman (50); St Johnstone: Duberry (79), Sheerin pen (90+4)

Mehmet : fate is in our own hands

16/04/2010 21:29:39 by SPLBanter filed in News.

Buddies striker Billy Mehmet admits that the prospect of relegation weights heavy on the mind, but feels that St Mirren have enough about them to beat they drop and is glad they have matters in their own hands. As they prepare for the trip to St Johnstone on Saturday.

"You think about it all the time," confessed Mehmet.

"Last season was probably worse because we knew if we lost to Falkirk we would have been down.

"This season we have still got five games left and it's still in our own hands. No-one wants to go down.

"It has a massive effect on the club and on yourself so hopefully we can put it right."

Mehmet went on to say that the players felt a duty to do it for manager Gus MacPherson as he brought most of the current team to the squad, but suggested a sense of professional pride was also driving them.

"We don't want to be known as players who got relegated.

"When we first came in on Monday, it was a bit disappointing and the mood was a bit down.

"But we know we've just got to bounce back now.

"We've got five massive games to save our SPL status and we just have to look to the game on Saturday and make sure we get the three points."

Of tomorrows opponents Mehmet said: "They are going to go into the game trying to win so they can finish in seventh place. That will be their aim and it's going to be a tough game.

"Playing against St Johnstone this season, they have all been tough games. We just have to try to play with confidence and get the three points.

"It's still in our own hands because our goal difference is better than Falkirk's but we want to try and get as many points as we can as quickly as possible."

Gus MacPherson is being tipped to name an unchanged side for the trip to McDiarmid.

Despite losing last week's relegation clash with Falkirk, the Buddies squad came through unscathed and the manager is expected to give the same players the chance to respond.

MacPherson is still without defender Jack Ross, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he continues to struggle with an ankle problem.

History

St Mirren were originally formed in 1875 as Gentlemen’s Club and in the first couple of years predominantly played Cricket and Rugby Union. However due to the fast growing popularity of Association Football the members voted to change codes and St Mirren Football Club was born in 1877. The club was named St Mirren after the Patron Saint of Paisley the town in which club resides. The team colours for the first season were scarlet and blue but shortly after changed to the black and white stripes still worn to this day. The St Mirren crest has changed slightly several times over the years however, the one constant on the badge since the clubs’ inception has been the Paisley Coat of Arms.

St Mirren played their first game on 6th October 1877 which they won 1-0 against Johnstone Britania at Shotrods. In the early days St Mirren played their home games at several places including Thistle Park and West March before finally moving to Love Street in 1894, which would become the clubs home for over a century until their move to Greenhill Road in 2009.

In 1890 St Mirren became a Founder Member of the Scottish Football League. In 1907 the club reached its first major final the Scottish Cup Final where they would lose 5-1 to Celtic. The Buddies would eventually go on to win the trophy three times in 1926, 1959 and 1987.

Historically the club has mainly ‘yo-yoed’ between the Premier League and First Division, they last won promotion in season 2005-06 and will start their fourth consecutive season in the top flight in 2009.
