Jelevic deal done?

19/08/2010 15:00:24 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

Further to the news we brought you this morning regarding the on-off transfer of Nikica Jelevic to Rangers, Sky Sports News are now claiming that Jelevic WILL NOT play for Rapid Vienna this evening and is in fact on his way to Glasgow to tie up the loose ends on his protracted move to the Ibrox club.

It is rumoured that Jelevic has sacrificed a substantial pay-off  from the Austrians by refusing to play tonight as he wanted to force the transfer through.

Sky quote Rapid representative Rudolph Edlinger as saying: "Against all expectations, Nikica Jelavic said today he no longer wanted to play for Rapid,

"That's a shock for the whole Rapid family.

"Anyone who goes through with such a decision has no place here anymore."

Weiss deal imminent, whilst Jelevic saga drags on

19/08/2010 12:31:33 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

Rangers are today expected to finalise the deal that will bring Manchester City’s 20 year-old winger Vladimir Weiss to Ibrox on a season long loan deal, with the player currently in Glasgow for a medical.

The Slovakian World Cup star who had earlier been linked with a move to Celtic, [calling that potential move "a dream come true" as recently as last week] is now set to fill Rangers’ problem position on the left flank.

It is rumoured that whilst Celtic baulked at the size of the one-off fee for taking the player for a season, Rangers swooped in at the last minute agreeing to pay City’s asking price and pick up a sizeable chunk of the player’s wages.

Meanwhile the Nikica Jelevic saga drags on with the player still keen on a move to Glasgow, but his club Rapid now insisting he will play in their Europa League play-off game against Aston Villa this evening.

If Jelevic plays it could finally put an end to Rangers’ interest in the player.

Rapid sporting director Alfred Hortnagl is in defiant mood angered by Martin Bain’s comments who earlier this week slated the Austrian club for playing games over the deal.

Hortnagl refutes that claim and insists the reason the deal appeared to collapse over the weekend had nothing to do with them but Rangers’ failure to agree personal terms with the player himself.

Hortnagl said: "It is simply too late to agree to the transfer. It would be irresponsible just before an important game against Villa to sell such a player and not have anyone to cover."

Jelavic deal still up in the air

17/08/2010 14:52:33 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

Confusion reigns over the transfer of Nikica Jelevic which looked dead in the water as recently as last week only to be given the kiss of life by the player himself over the weekend.

It is thought that although the clubs had reached an agreement over the fee last week the there were complicating factors regarding the sell on fee to his previous club, the fact that Jelevic was holding out for a six figure pay-off from Rapid, and that he wanted more from Rangers.

However, following Rangers’ capture of James Beattie on Friday it is believed Jelevic’s advisors contacted Rangers again fearing they may have missed the boat.

Martin Bain responded by negotiating a deal suitable for all parties and it was rumoured on several websites last night that the deal was done and Jelevic was a Rangers player.

That now looks premature as Rapid this morning threw a spanner in the works by naming Jelevic in their squad to play Aston Villa in the Europa League on Thursday.

Should Rapid come through that tie the player would be ineligible for Rangers Champions League campaign.

Martin Bain responded by saying: "We have agreed personal terms with the player having already reached an agreement with Rapid on his transfer fee,

"But his club have moved the goalposts and this is not acceptable.

"We expect the player to be in Glasgow in the next 24 hours to undergo a medical."

However, Rapid insist Jelavic will be part of their plans for the game against Villa.

Sporting director Alfred Hortnagl said: "He will be staying with Rapid Vienna ahead of our games against Aston Villa.

"We do not have time to bring in a new player before the matches so Jelavic won't be leaving the club."

Rangers 2 Kilmarnock 1

Rangers  2  Kilmarnock  1

The day started great for Rangers with the unfurling of the championship flag by Chairman Alistair Johnston amongst hearty celebration from the Ibrox faithful.

In addition was the introduction of their first new player in two years, James Beattie, and the promise of one or two more to follow.

Then just after the quarter hour mark Rangers had more to celebrate when Kenny Miller somehow bundled the ball home after a James Fowler had blocked a Kirk Broadfoot effort on the line.

Rangers had started the game well and when Millers effort went in you could have forgiven the home fans for believing they were in for a straightforward afternoon, especially given Killie are many a pundit’s favourites for the drop.

However, Mixu Paatelainen’s side with several new faces in it hadn’t read the script and settled in making life difficult for their hosts.

Toward the end of the first half Killie enjoyed decent spells of possession in the Rangers half and Danny Invincible and James Fowler both went close to equalising.

Rangers saw things out until half time and started the second period on top, with Beattie squandering a decent chance for a debut goal after Frazer Wright’s slip had let him in.

Rangers, however, did add to their lead on 57 minutes when their best player on the day Steven Naismith drove home an angled shot from Miller’s lofted pass.

Killie though responded immediately when Sasa Papac was correctly penalised for a push on Dayton in the penalty box.

Jamie Hamill stepped up a calmly stroked the ball past McGregor from 12 yards.

Kyle Lafferty almost eased the Rangers’ nerves with a free-kick which whistled past the upright, but it was Killie who finished the stronger as they looked for an equaliser, so much so that Walter Smith left his seat in the directors box for one in the dugout.

James Beattie was withdrawn after 80 minutes to mass applause from the majority inside Ibrox. As debuts go it was ok, nothing more. In his defence he only arrived in Glasgow yesterday and hasn’t even trained with his new teammates yet. More will be expected of him in the coming weeks and months.

Rangers just about deserved to see the game out based on the chances they created, but Killie kept them honest for 90 minutes and made them work for their 3 points.

Kilmarnock:

Rangers close to deal for Beattie?

12/08/2010 15:01:16 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

With rumours that the deal for Nikica Jelavic could be dead in the water, Walter Smith has confirmed that the club are talking to Stoke City about James Beattie and Portsmouth about Tommy Smith.

In the case of Beattie the deal looks all but done with Rangers agreeing a £1.5m fee for the 32 year-old and the player in Glasgow to thrash out personal terms. As ever wages may be an issue.

As far as Tommy Smith is concerned Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has stated his reluctance to let the striker go from an already threadbare squad, and has warned Rangers not to think they can take advantage of the club’s poor financial situation.

Pompey are believed to want to recoup the £1.8m paid to Watford for the striker at the beginning of last season whilst Rangers will try to do a deal somewhere nearer the £1m mark.

History

The original idea for Glasgow Rangers Football Club was born in 1872 by two brothers Moses and Peter McNeil, and their friends Peter Campbell and William McBeath. The name Rangers was adopted from an English Rugby team and the first couple of outings were very much a family and friends affair with the McNeil’s being joined by a third brother Hugh. There were also two more Campbell brothers and two Vallances.  Although the team played two friendly matches in 1872 (one an 11-0 thrashing of Clyde) the date of 1873 is recognised as the club’s formation as this is when they held their first official meeting.

Rangers would have to wait a further 18 years for their first major honour (although they would more than make up for this in time) but there were a few landmark dates in between. In 1877 the club reached the Scottish Cup Final for the first time, losing to Vale of Leven in 3-2 in a second replay. They would lose the cup final again two years later in 1879 to the same opponents in more controversial fashion. The match was drawn 1-1 but Rangers so infuriated by having a goal disallowed refused to turn up for the replay and Vale of Leven were handed the trophy. In May 1888 Rangers played their first game against the newly formed Celtic, they would lose 5-2 but little did they know then that that ‘friendly’ fixture would go on to become one of the fiercest rivalries in world sport.

1891 saw Rangers win their first major honour the Scottish League Championship. They finished the season joint top with Dumbarton on 29 points and play off was arranged which also ended level 1-1. So it was decided that the League Championship be shared, this is the one and only time this has happened. Since then Rangers have gone on to win a further 51 League Championships (a world record) the last of which was 2008-09. The club has also claimed 33 Scottish Cups and 25 Scottish League Cups.

Rangers were the first British team to reach a European final, the European Cup Winners Cup 1961, they would lose this final to Fiorentina and again in 1967 to Bayern Munich. Not to be deterred Rangers eventually lifted their first and to this date only European trophy (ECWC) in 1972 by defeating Dynamo Moscow 3-2 in Barcelona. More recently Rangers contested the final of the 2008 UEFA Cup Final which they lost 2-0 to Zenit Saint Petersburg.

The darkest day in the club’s history was the Ibrox disaster on 2nd January 1971 where 66 people were crushed to death toward the end of a match against Celtic. As the 80,000 strong crowd was trying to disperse at full time, many fell down the stairway at the Copland Road end of the ground leading to a large scale crushing. It was initially thought the crush was caused by Rangers fans rushing back up the stairwell after Rangers had scored an equaliser however, a later enquiry said that the crush was likely to have happened ten minutes after the final whistle and to have been triggered by someone falling on the stairs.
