Hearts 1 St Johnstone 1

Hearts  1  St Johnstone  1

Sam Parkin scored a goal on his debut to give 10 man St Johnstone a hard fought away point on the opening day of the season at Tynecastle.

Hearts, the better side for most of the match, looked to be going in to the break a goal up when Calum Elliot headed in Lee Wallace's near post cross on the stoke of half-time.

But Saints hit back less than a minute later trough Parkin’s excellent header from twelve yards.

Hearts new strike pair of Kevin Kyle and Stephen Elliot were given a standing ovation when they made their first appearances as 65th-minute substitutes but neither could find the net as the second half failed to reach the heights of the first.

The visitors held on at the end despite being reduced to ten men in the 74th minute when Steven Anderson was dismissed for a rash tackle on Suso Santana.

Post match Derek McInnes was critical of Anderson saying: "The sending-off changed everything, I need to see it again but it was a stupid challenge, I'm not going to defend it; it was a really stupid challenge from Steven Anderson. It's something he'll have to learn from because it put his team-mates right up against it and they answered it.

"He should be down about it. He's not a kid anymore, he needs to be better than that in getting involved in that tackle. The boy was not going anywhere. We've got a lot of trust and faith in him and he was playing well but he made the referee make a decision and he has to learn from it.''

Hearts gaffer Jim Jefferies was reasonably satisfied given his lengthy injury and suspension list, but felt the sending off didn’t help his side either.

He said: "I think we were the team that looked like we could win the game. And I've seen it a thousand times when someone gets sent off, they sit in. They knocked it up front looking to stem the flow.

"For me, with the number of players we've had out, there were lots of positives. I felt we were the most dominant side out there. That's credit to the boys that came in and did well.''

The former Preston striker could also line up alongside Kevin Kyle, who has made a quicker than expected recovery from groin surgery.

However, that’s where the good news ends; the Jambos will be without suspended trio Eggert Jonsson, Ismael Bouzid and Ryan Stevenson, while David Obua [groin], Andy Driver [knee] and Gary Glen [hamstring] are sidelined.

Saunders scrambled home the opener three minutes before the end of an entertaining first half and John Sutton claimed his 12th goal of the season moments later.

The goals were reward for an enterprising display and Motherwell came close to adding to their lead in a comfortable second half.

Eggert Jonsson will be missing for Hearts when they face Motherwell at Tynecastle on Saturday but Calum Elliot should be fit.

The defender is suspended and will sit out the game against 'Well, serving a one-game ban having been sent off in last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Rangers.

The injury crisis is beginning to ease with only Jose Goncalves, Andrew Driver, Marian Kello and Janos Balogh definitely out.

Gary Glen may Make the squad having recovered from his hamstring problems and Jim Jefferies admits he has a tough decision to make over whether Michael Stewart is involved.

JJ: 'Well victory imperitive in Euro chase

21/04/2010 15:48:32 by SPLBanter filed in News.

Hearts manager Jim Jefferies is drumming into his players the importance of this weekend’s fixture at home to Motherwell as they aim to chase down a European slot for next season.

Fourth place currently occupied by Hibernian offers up the last Europa Cup slot, however, if Dundee United were to win the Scottish Cup final having already confirmed European football for next season, it would open up fifth place for another qualifying position.

A victory over The Steelmen at Tynecastle on Saturday would leave them only one point behind Motherwell and three behind Hibs with the green half of Edinburgh entertaining Rangers on the Sunday.

Should Hearts beat Motherwell and Rangers beat Hibs on Sunday it sets up a cracking Edinburgh derby with a lot at stake on May 1.

Jeffereis told Hearts official website: "This is a huge game for us now against Motherwell,

"We always knew Rangers was going to be a difficult match for us but the most important thing was that Motherwell didn't pick up anything either at the weekend.

"If we can get the crowd behind us and get a win on Saturday, hopefully that will put pressure on Hibs. They play Rangers on Sunday and that is not going to be easy for them with what's at stake.

"If Rangers were then to win then there would be just three points between us and Hibs when we play them at Easter Road. That's why Motherwell is a key game for us and they will also be playing Hibs at Fir Park when we take on Dundee United at Tynecastle on Wednesday, May 5 so it's very interesting.

"It's all to play for at the moment and with three games at home coming up, this is our best chance to give it everything."

Rangers 2 Hearts 0

19/04/2010 13:54:52 by SPLBanter filed in Match Reports.

Rangers 2  Hearts 0

Rangers moved to within two points of securing back-to-back titles with a 2-0 victory over Hearts at Ibrox.

The much maligned Kyle Lafferty opened the scoring when he thumped in a powerful near-post header from a Kevin Thomson corner ten minutes after the break, and Kenny Miller added a late goal from the spot for his 20th of the season.

The first half was a fairly drab and edgy affair with Rangers again looking slightly nervous with the title in almost within touching distance.

Hearts gave as good as they got with most of the game played in the middle third of the pitch but when they did break in to the final third they were as blunt as a rusty butter knife with David Obua who is a trier and a nuisance but not a striker and Suso Santana who is a winger but likewise not a striker.

The first 45 really was devoid of anything worth talking about in an attacking sense, Rangers had a couple of shots blocked and a couple fired over from distance and Steven Davis forced Jamie MacDonald into a save.

At the other end Suso Santana bulleted a header wide from Craig Thomson’s cross when he might have done better.

Rangers almost took the lead shortly after the break when Papac found Miller free but just as his header looked to be sneaking in Jamie MacDonald somehow got across to claw it round the post.

However, they didn’t have too long to wait for the opener when on 54 minutes David Obua criminally allowed Kyle Lafferty to run off him without as much as a token challenge to meet Thomson’s corner and angle it past MacDonald.

To be fair to the big man who we’ve given a bit of stick on this site for the less pleasant side of his game/nature it was very well taken and he had an excellent game in general.

In fact when rangers were toiling in the first half he was easily their best player, if he sticks to playing the game [as he undoubtedly does have talent] and cuts out the theatrics and winding up of opponents he could become a real asset for the Gers next season.

From that point on there was only one winner as Hearts never looked like scoring, they could still be playing now without having broken their duck.

Thomson went close when he curled one inches over before Iain Brines pointed to the spot and awarded a fairly soft penalty to the hosts for a push by Eggert Jonsson on Steven Naismith.

Any contact was minimal and Naismith probably wasn’t getting to the ball but Brines thought otherwise and as a result of giving the penalty had to send the Icelander off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

With the ‘desperate for a goal’ Kris Boyd having just been substituted the honour fell to Kenny Miller who fired his shot high to MacDonald’s left for 2-0.

It was a fairly comfortable afternoon for Rangers once they shrugged off the anxiousness against a Hearts side which had plenty of possession but was totally toothless.

Rangers can win the title now with a win at Easter Road regardless of results elsewhere, unfortunately for them their will only be 800 Gers fans there to see it as the old East Terrace has been demolished for redevelopment.

As for Hearts their problems are the same as they were at the start of the season, they have nothing up front.

Rangers: McGregor, Weir, Papac, Whittaker, Bougherra, McCulloch, Davis, Thomson, Boyd (Novo 78), Miller, Lafferty (Naismith 69)

Hearts: MacDonald, Wallace, Obua, Bouzid, Zaliukas, Jonsson, Palazuelos, Santana (Templeton 82), Black, Kingston (Stewart 74), Thomson (Robinson 62)

Goals: Rangers: Lafferty (54), Miller pen (84)

History

Heart of Midlothian Football Club was founded in 1874 and named after the Old Toll Booth of Edinburgh which once stood in the Royal Mile. In the cobble stones at the entrance to where the old building once stood is a mosaic in a heart shape on which the club badge was based. In August 1875, Heart of Midlothian FC joined both the Scottish Football Association and become a founder member of the Edinburgh Football Association (now the East of Scotland FA). The club registered its colours as "marone" which is the old Edinburgh spelling of maroon. Tom Purdie was the first captain and home matches were played on the East Meadows Public Park. On 20th April 1878 the club won its first honour when it defeated Hibernians 3-2 in the final of the Edinburgh FA cup, and so the rivalry began.

The club moved home three times in its formative years first of all to Powderhall Grounds in 1879 and then to a private field in Dalry in 1881. At the new ground in Darly a pavilion and stand were erected and this became known the first Tynecastle. The team christened their new home on 9th April 1881 with an 8-0 thrashing of Hanover. Five years later in 1886 Hearts moved across the road to the location where the current Tynecastle still stands. Again Hearts opened up with a win at their new surroundings beating Bolton Wanderers 4-1.

On February 7th 1891 Hearts won their first major honour by defeating Dumbarton 1-0 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park. This victory opened the door to a particularly profitable period in the club’s history. In the fifteen year period between the first Scottish Cup win 1891 and their fourth 1906, Hearts would also add two Scottish League titles 1894-95, 1896-97 and two more Scottish Cups 1896, 1901.

Hearts then went for the best part of 50 years without a major trophy until what turned out to be the most successful period in the club’s history, between 1955 when they won their first Scottish league Cup and 1963 when they won their fourth. During this eight year period Hearts won two more Scottish League Cups 1959, 1960, one Scottish Cup 1956 and two Scottish League Titles 1957-58 and 1959-60. The period since 1960 has not been as profitable with the club only adding two Scottish Cups since one in 1998 and one in 2006. Hearts did come within 10 minutes of winning the league in 1986 but two late goals from Dundee’s Albert Kidd saw them lose out on goal difference to Celtic.

Hearts have a fierce rivalry with Edinburgh neighbours Hibernian, but in days gone by it was a much more cordial affair. In fact it was Hearts who lobbied the Scottish Football Association hard on Hibernian's half for inclusion at a time when only teams made up of Scots were allowed to be members. During these times Hearts were fined several times for playing 'illegal' matches against Hibs until the SFA relented and alowed them membership.

The club’s major honours board reads

Scottish League Champions: 4, Scottish Cup: 7, Scottish league Cup: 4
