Lenny hopes for full house

19/08/2010 14:44:00 by SPLBanter filed in News.

Celtic gaffer Neil Lennon is again calling on the club’s fans to fill Celtic Park to capacity for tonight’s crucial Europa League play-off first leg.

Speaking on the official Celtic website Lennon said: "It would be nice to get a big crowd because I thought the atmosphere against Braga was great,

"The fans were very encouraging even though we were a long way behind in the tie.

"They stuck with the team and the team changed the game around so we will be looking for a similar sort of response again."

Lennon was in bullish mood ahead of the game following Saturday’s decent victory over a stubborn Inverness side, and feels his side have the quality to see off the challenge of the Dutch over two legs.

He continued: "The intensity, the commitment and the quality of our play recently has been good,

"We’re very positive going into these two games against Utrecht.

"We’re looking to win the game and progress in the competition. European football is vital for Celtic.

"Obviously the priority is trying to get the title back from Rangers but I’ve had some great years in the last decade or so in Europe and we’d like to get in and have a shot of that.

"Getting through these two games is important for us and the rest of the season."

Team news to follow.

In other news Lennon has received some unwanted news on the injury front after it was revealed that full-back Andreas Hinkel will be out for the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

A statement on the clubs website reads:

It is with great regret that Celtic Football Club announces that, after an accident in training, Andreas Hinkel has suffered significant injury to his right knee.

It has been confirmed after MRI scans as a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. Andreas will be referred for the appropriate investigation and assessment.

He will require surgery and could be out for a period of up to nine months.

Clearly this is very sad news for Andreas and he will be receiving every support from the Club

Celtic complete Izaguirre deal

18/08/2010 15:16:57 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

Celtic have completed the signing of Honduras left-back Emilio Izaguirre from Motagua.

In a week that started with Celtic signing Sweden centre-back Daniel Majstorovic, manager Neil Lennon has now landed Izaguirre.

Izaguirre was not signed in time to be included in the squad for Utrecht tomorrow but could make his SPL debut against St Mirren this weekend.

Lennon has taken his time bringing in Izaguirre and he believes the club have a quality acquisition on their hands.

"He trained on Wednesday," said Lennon. "He won't play on Thursday but should be available for selection after that.

"He's a good player. He's strong defensively, he's quick, he's got a very good left foot and he's good going forward. "He had a good World Cup for Honduras. [left-back] is an area we've been looking to fill for a while.

"We've taken our time with this one and we think we've got the right one."

Celtic complete deal for Majstorović, Izaguirre deal close

16/08/2010 16:18:02 by SPLBanter filed in News.

Celtic have today completed the signing of Swedish international defender Daniel Majstorović from AEK Athens.

The giant [6’4”] no nonsense centre half has penned a two year deal and is available for Celtic’s Europa League play-off against FC Utrecht at Parkhead on Thursday night.

The Hoops have also agreed a fee believed to be around £600,000 for Honduran left back Emilio Izaguirre.

The 24 year-old who has also agreed personal terms is in Glasgow for a medical today and all being well will sign imminently.

Izaguirre has 44 international caps and started two of Honduras’ three World Cup matches.

There is no more news on the potential loan signings of Craig Bellamy, Shay Given or Wladimir Weiss.

Meanwhile the injury news is not good. Gary Hooper’s calf strain has been re-diagnosed as a tear and he will be out for six weeks, and Thomas Rogne is out for three with a thigh strain.

Celtic’s Europa League opponents FC Utrecht won 3-1 at the weekend at home to Pierre Van Hooijdonk’s old club NAC Breda.

Breda played for much of the second half with 10 men and had only 9 for the final ten minutes having had two players sent off.

The fantastically monikered Ricky Van Wolfswinkel scored twice for Utrecht.

Inverness CT 0 Celtic 1

Inverness CT  0  Celtic  1

To coin an old cliché this was the stereotypical 'game of two halves'.

Caley at home on their return to the SPL after a year in exile came flying out of the blocks and had a nervy looking Celtic on the back foot for the best part of the first half.

But although the Highlanders had the majority of the possession in the opening period they missed a real punch in the final third being restricted mainly to half chances.

Celtic came onto a game in the latter part of the first half and had the best two chances, with Maloney rattling Ryan Esson’s cross bar with only the keeper to beat, and Samaras striking the upright with a header from a Charlie Mulgrew corner.

The second half was a different story as whatever Neil Lennon said during the break appeared to sink in.

Celtic lifted the tempo, took the game by the scruff, and ten minutes in the game was lit up by a brilliant individual dribble and finish by Paddy McCourt who up until that point had been largely anonymous.

It would also prove to be his last contribution as he was bizarrely injured in a clash with teammate Shaun Maloney as he turned to celebrate.

Celtic should have been out of sight but missed several good chances in front of goal and forced Esson into a couple of really decent saves.

The lively James Forrest, on for McCourt, came closest when he crashed a shot off the cross bar from distance.

In truth the margin of the victory probably didn’t reflect Celtic’s dominance in the second half.

Inverness CT: Esson, Tokely, Munro, Gillet, McCann, Cox, Duncan, Hayes (Sutherland 86), Ross (Blumanshtein 61) (Proctor 78), Odhiambo, Rooney

Celtic:  Zaluska, Hooiveld, Cha Du-Ri, Mulgrew, Loovens, Brown, Ledley, McCourt (Forrest 62), Samaras, Fortune (Juarez 89), Maloney

Goals: Celtic; McCourt [56]

Lennon swoops to shore up defence

13/08/2010 21:59:04 by SPLBanter filed in Transfers.

AEK Athens are claiming on the club's website that their Swedish international defender Daniel Majstorović is leaving the club to have a medical at Celtic tomorrow Saturday August 14.

Majstorović who played the full 90 minutes for Sweden against Scotland on Wednesday evening is quoted as saying: "I spent two beautiful years in Greece and AEK Athens and I'm glad I had the opportunity to play at such a great team. I want to thank everyone who worked this time, and the world of the club for its support.

"I understand that IMG, as the whole country is in a difficult economic situation and hope everything go well. For me, moving me at Celtic was a very good chance, and is a major European club.

"Tomorrow, I go to Glasgow to go through medical screening and then sign my contract."

Majstorovic who is 33 is believed to have agreed a two year deal with the Hoops.

History

Celtic Football club was founded on 6th November 1887 in St Mary’s church hall in the Calton area of Glasgow by Marist Brother Walfrid. The club was originally formed on charitable grounds as a means to raise money for the poor of the east end of Glasgow. Just over six months later on 28th May 1888 Celtic played their first official game against Rangers at the first Celtic Park. Celtic won the game 5-2 and the first ever goal scorer for the club was Neil McCallum. The Celtic kit that day was not the famous green and white hoops but a white shirt with a green collar and a red Celtic cross on the breast. The colours switched to green and white vertical stripes around 1890, before finally changing to their iconic hoops in 1903.

In 1889 just one year after their first official game and in their first full season Celtic reached the Scottish Cup final. They were to lose the game 2-1 to Third Lanark but three years later in 1892 they found themselves in the cup final again. This time they won beating Queens Park 5-2 and so collected the club's first trophy.

Celtic were in a hurry, in the same year they won the Scottish Cup for the first time they also moved to the ground where the present stadium still stands. One year later in 1893 Celtic won their first Scottish League Championship.

Since those early victories the club has gone on to win 42 Scottish Championships and 34 Scottish Cups, they have also won the Scottish League Cup 14 times.

The club's most famous night though was on May 25th 1967 when 11 men from in and around the Glasgow area became legends. Celtic had already completed a clean sweep of domestic trophies when they took to the pitch in the Estadio Nacional for the final of the European Cup. Their opponents that day were Inter Milan who had won the trophy twice previously in preceding years 1964 and 1965 under esteemed coach Helenio Herrera. Inter’s infamous cattanccio style of counter attacking football would be put to the test by Jock Stein’s all out attacking, entertaining game. Despite going 1-0 down to an early penalty Celtic would strike back with two second half goals from Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers to become the first British team to win the European Cup. The team that day of: Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox, went down in History as the ‘Lisbon Lions’.

Celtic reached the final of the European Cup again in 1970 where they lost to feyenoord 2-1 after extra time. Celtic also reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2003 under Martin O’Neill where they lost 3-2 to Porto after extra time.
